DESCRIPTION


X-LINESHELF

This project explores a design approach that creates a distinct identity through subtle variations, eliminating visual noise. Instead of fitting the aluminum angles to the shelf corners the conventional way, the X-Line Shelf inverts the angles to create a distinctive structural point. To achieve this form, the glass panels and aluminum angles are held together by tension without the use of any screws: stainless steel wires are drawn diagonally and compressed with ferrules to secure the entire form.

The piece balances four distinct materials: aluminum angles, stainless steel wire, ferrules, and satin glass. By pairing the strong, industrial look of aluminum with the soft, diffusing texture of satin glass, the design highlights the natural weight and temperature of each element. This thoughtful combination brings out the inherent beauty of the materials, elevating the overall value of the furniture.

The fabrication process involves precisely drilling slots and holes into the aluminum angles according to the drawing. The next steps include brushing the aluminum surfaces to remove scratches and stains, and deburring to smooth out all sharp edges. Then, the satin glass panels fit into the aluminum frames, structurally locking together using the wire-and-ferrule tension system. Finally, silicone pads go between the aluminum and glass for protection, and felt pads attach to the bottom of the legs to prevent floor damage.
