DADOCHAIR & TABLE While modern Korean living environments have predominantly shifted to a Western-style (chair-sitting) lifestyle, floor-sitting habits still remains deeply embedded in our subconscious and daily routines. Historically, traditional Korean spaces possessed a unique flexibility; rooms were not defined by fixed furniture, but rather by human activities, allowing a single living area to transform into a dining room or a bedroom. In essence, the identity of a space was defined by the user’s actions, not the furniture. This project seeks to integrate the essence of this traditional Korean spatial philosophy, where flexibly is adapted to different situations into modern furniture design. By blending traditional sentiment with contemporary lifestyles, it reinterprets our ancestors' fluid residential values, where a single piece of furniture could richly alter the context of a space.
'Dado Chair' is a multifunctional, transforming piece of furniture that seamlessly transitions between chair-sitting and floor-sitting configurations through a modular, assembly and disassembly structure. It is designed to change its structural form in various ways to suit the user's environment and purpose. Normally, it functions as a sleek, modern chair suited for a standard living room or study. However, when the user wishes to enjoy a tea ceremony (Dado), it can be intuitively disassembled without any separate tools into two floor chairs and one central tea table. This practical design allows modern individuals to utilize their space efficiently in their daily Westernized routines, while dynamically experiencing the mood of traditional floor-sitting tea culture within the exact same space when desired.
